Move a Certificate

Move a Certificate

There may be certain instances in which the SSL certificate must be moved from one server to another. A SSL certificate is bound to the server software and the common name. Therefore, the certificate and its corresponding private key may be exported from the original server and imported into the target server as long as both servers run the same server software (i.e. Microsoft IIS to Microsoft IIS) and the target server will be hosting a site that matches the common name.

If multiple servers are being used, you will need to purchase 1 license for every server being secured. Per VeriSign's Certificate Practices Statement (CPS), you are required to license the TOTAL # of servers that will be secured. For more information please view the VeriSign Certificate Practices Statement (CPS).

Move to a New Host

If you do not manage your own servers, you will need to work with your hosting companies to move the certificates.

  1. Determine if the new hosting company uses the same server software vendor.
  2. Ask your current hosting company to export a copy of the certificate and send it to you.
  3. Provide the encrypted file to your new hosting company.

I was not familiar with this process but this article gave me a clear idea about how one can obtain digital certificates. With the help of this information I learn about the documents which are needed in this process.
